José Afonso Teixeira and Iva Miranda Pires are geographers and they teach in the New University of Lisbon (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences). Their research activities are developed in different institutions: the e-Geo (José Afonso Teixeira) and the CEG (Iva Pires)

About e-GEO and José Afonso Teixeira

PORTUGAL: LISBON 2
The e-GEO, Centre of Geographical and Regional Planning Studies, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, founded in 1981, integrated 53 researchers, of which 27 Ph.D. and 26 other researchers (non Ph.D.) by the end of 2006. Most of the researchers belong to the teaching staff or are former students of the Department of Geography and Regional Planning of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, the Home Institution.
The main objectives of e-GEO are:

* To produce knowledge on concepts, methods, instruments and techniques in Geography and Spatial Planning and Development;
* To integrate senior undergraduate and graduate students in scientific activities;
* To promote the discussion and diffusion of research results;
* To offer extension services.

In order to attain the above objectives, the following activities are carried out:

* Development of projects implemented by senior researchers as leaders of teams whose members include those working on graduate dissertations, recently graduate and senior undergraduate students;
* Organisation of national and international scientific meetings;
* Editing and publishing of e-GEO's scientific research;
* Inter-institutional and international co-operation.

José Afonso Teixeira develops his scientific work at e-Geo. Main research interests:
(1) Economic Geography, Economic restructuring;
(2) Services and Territory; Urban Planning and Retail Development;
(3) Iberian Economic Relations

ABOUT CEG: Centre of Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon (CEG)

The CEG is the largest unit dedicated to geographical research in Portugal. With more than 90 researchers presently working, the Centre has developed research of excellent quality that is recognized both nationally and internationally. The excellence of the investigation carried out by CEG researchers is recognized not only in the academic milieu but also by civil society institutions and public organisations, with which it has celebrated several protocols aiming at the accomplishment of studies in the area of territorial planning and public policies, of which we can refer as examples the consultancy services provided to the Portuguese Parliament, and to the Ministries of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development or to the Service of Civil Protection and the National Water Institute.
