The field of activities of the Research Professor comprises service businesses in support of technology-based service industries and the public sector, especially modelling of service processes and the methods to develop and design services.

The Research Professor shall implement VTT's strategy by leading and carrying out internationally recognized research aimed at developing new and improving existing services across different sectors of industry and the public sector. In addition to the scientific merits, the impact of research is an important measure of success.

In addition to the actual research, the Research Professor is expected to be in a key role to define the focus on VTT's future research, to coordinate VTT's service related research activities across different application areas, and to represent VTT in the national and international service research and business community. The duties include also development of project proposals for the funding agencies as well as contracts with industrial and public clients.

The Research Professor positions at VTT are either permanent or fixed-term. Usually, the first appointment is for a five-year term. The Research Professor shall have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline. He or she is also expected to have an excellent track record both as regards the command of research methodologies as well as the ability to implement research results into practice.

Due to multidisciplinary nature of research at VTT, special emphasis is put on collaboration skills and ability to lead distributed networks of researchers.
