was created in May of 1996 with the denomination of Laboratory of Investigation of the Activities of Services. Since then, it is integrated in the University of Alcalá, Madrid. The main objective of Servilab is the study of the facts and socio-economic problems that modern societies face in a global and changing world. The works developed are not limited to theoretical aspects; they always assist to the demands and practical consequences of the studied topics, trying to offer proposals and alternatives for the action.
The service sector and its different activity branches are one of the major research areas of Servilab. However, the Institute has extended its field of interest to other subjects, as the labour market, the territorial and environmental questions, the problems of the small and medium companies, and the financing of the productive activities, among others. The central research topics of Servilab can be summarized as follows : • Services, Innovation and Competitiveness: business services, fairs and exhibitions, European policies, public sector economics, productivity. • Sectorial Studies, Finances and Medium and Small Enterprises: business finances and innovation (SME), evaluation of public policies and business development services, entrepreneurial spirit and creation of companies. • Labour Market, Employment and Training Area: female labour market, tertiarisation and labour implications. • Urban and Territorial Studies Area: regional growth, economic disparities and convergence, economic activities location, regional policy and evaluation of public policies, European economy.
